Artist Statement
At the beginning of the pandemic, fear captured me. On the couch, under a blanket, I was safe.
My longing for safety stemmed from my childhood in Friesland. I left the soil where I was once rooted.
Where my family had lived for generations. And I landed in my new home Amsterdam.
Yet... I still think in my dialect, which is different from the language I speak now.
The contrast brings movement, friction & swing.
Suze nane poppe
‘ t Kealtsje leit yn ‘e groppe
Heit en mem sa fier fan hûs
Dy kinne wy net beroppe
Hush, little child
The calf lies in the gully
Father and mother so far from home
We can't call them anymore.

In my work I often create an object first, I photograph it and then write and paint on the photo print.
Then I place the prints in the space together with the original object.
I am experimenting with multi-layering in my work.
I explore how to show very precisely what I experience in a moment.
Most of the time that experience consists of multiple layers of emotions, thoughts, feelings.
In addition to my personal practice, I am part of collective De Derde Plaats with five artist friends.
